Here’s our original 10 to start the season:
M Sydney Becerra Sydney Becerra M TX , Flower Mound (Texas), Sr., Texas A&M
Becerra is coming off a season where she had 15 goals and 20 assists while leading Flower Mound to a state title and Winter FAB 50 No. 1 ranking. She was the District 6-6A MVP. She was at her best in the postseason with five goals and 10 assists, including assisting both goals in Flower Mound’s 201 state title victory.
M Maribel Flores Maribel Flores F State #27 Nation CA , Troy (Calif.), Jr., Stanford
In what you will see as a constant theme among several of the preseason California players is their availability for the high school season. Flores is among the nation’s top 2023 prospects, however, she was invited to U17 National Team training in Mexico, leaving her high school status in question. She was the ECNL Southwest Conference Player of the Year for the U16s.
F McKenna Jenkins McKenna Jenkins M Wakeland | 2022 TX , Frisco Wakeland (Texas), Sr., UNLV
Class 5A always seems to come down to Wakeland and Highland Park, and Jenkins deliverde with both goals in the playoff win over Highland park that ultimately led to a state runner-up finish. Jenkins had 18 goals and 10 assists last season.
M Ally Lemos Ally Lemos M San Dimas | 2022 CA , San Dimas (Calif.), Sr., UCLA
Again, Lemos is a player in question entering this season. The expectation was Lemos was going to graduate early and enroll at UCLA. We’re leaving her on the Watch List for now as she’s still considered a 2022 high school grad. Last year, she led San Dimas to a 22-1 season, scoring 46 goals.
F/M Kelsey Major Kelsey Major M St. Mary's Dominican | 2022 LA , Dominican (La.), Sr., LSU
Major is last year’s Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year. She has Dominican off to an undefeated start and a early FAB 50 winter ranking. Last year, Major scored 26 goals and added 19 assists.
D Molly McDougal Molly McDougal M TX , Prosper (Texas), Jr., Florida
McDougal was the District 5-6A defensive player of the year after leading a defense that allowed only 10 goals during a 24-1 season. Prosper finished No. 2 in the FAB 50 last winter and will be a No. 1 contender this season.
F Mia Minestrella Mia Minestrella F Redondo Union (CA) | 2023 State #12 Nation CA , Redondo Union (Calif.), Jr., Duke
Minestrella netted 18 goals last year, her first playing high school soccer, as Redondo Union won a share of the Bay League title. She was named the Daily Breeze Player of the Year last spring.
F Kate Smith Kate Smith F Gulfport | 2022 MS , Gulfport (Miss.), Sr., Mississippi
Smith has Gulfport off to a 9-0-1 start. Gulfport is the defending state champ and this Mississippi signee scored the game-winning goal in last year’s state final. Smith also was a Clarion-Ledger first-team all-state performer in 2021.
F Alyssa Thompson Alyssa Thompson F Harvard-Westlake (CA) | 2023 State #1 Nation CA , Harvard-Westlake (Calif.), Jr., Stanford
The reigning CIF Southern Section Division I player of the year is an automatic on the Watch List to start the 2021-2022 campaign. However, her availability is yet to be determined. Thompson is a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team and preparation for the 2022 U20 World Championships might limit her time on the high school scene.
M Gisele Thompson Gisele Thompson D Harvard-Westlake (CA) | 2024 State #2 Nation CA , Harvard-Westlake (Calif.), So., Stanford
Like her sister, Alyssa, Gisele’s availability for high school play is a question for the winter season. This Thompson is part of the U.S. Under-17 National Team player pool that will be prepping for this summer’s U17 World Championships.
