Regional Rankings: Next up, Texas playoffs
The regular season in Texas is finished.
Next up is the daunting postseason run.
Grapevine (Texas) boys and Prosper (Texas) girls remain the state’s top-ranked programs, but quite a gauntlet stands in the way of them and a final state No. 1 ranking. The Texas UIL is the nation’s most grueling playoff system as the Class 6A and 5A brackets are a 128-team, single-elimination event. Most states don’t even have 128 teams in a statewide classification, much less have 128 that are qualifiers by finishing in the top four in its district.
There are plenty of contenders, especially in 6A girls, which feature Prosper. Southlake Carroll (Texas), Allen (Texas), Marcus (Texas), Hebron (Texas), Keller (Texas), and McKinney Boyd (Texas) are the 6A favorites from the DFW. While the Dallas teams have traditionally held the upper hand on the state level, Lake Travis (Texas), Ridge Point (Texas), and Reagan (Texas) are strong non-DFW contenders for the 6A crown.
The current region No. 1s are — BOYS Florida-North: Tampa Prep; Florida-South: Cypress Bay; Southeast: Jackson Academy (Miss.); Texas-North: Grapevine; Texas-South: Alief Elsik; California-North: Whitney; California-South: Servite; Southwest: Desert Vista (Ariz.) and GIRLS Florida-North: Creekside; Florida-South: Mariner; Southeast: Northwest Rankin (Miss.); Texas-North: Prosper; Texas-South: Dripping Springs; California-North: Oak Grove; California-South: Temecula Valley; Southwest: Kamehameha (Hawaii).
