Winter FAB 50: Boys rankings undergo massive overhaul, again
In this article:
Sure, Tampa Prep (Fla.) and Servite (Calif.) boys delivered championship performances last week.
But beyond that, it was a week full of surprises.
Tampa Prep capped a perfect season with a Florida 3A state title, and this week the Terrapins rise to No. 1 in the boys rankings following a shootout loss by former No. 1 El Paso Eastlake (Texas). Servite, which briefly held the No. 1 ranking, is back in the Top 5 following its Southern Section title.
The big movers in this week’s rankings are San Pasqual (Calif.) and South East (Calif.), which both jump into the Top 20 following section titles. Neither team was ranked in the FAB 50 last week. Throughout the FAB 50, several adjustments were made to account for both recent results and what lies ahead. This week, California soccer takes center stage with the NorCal and SoCal regional championships. Since there is no state championship in California, this event is the showcase of the season as champions and selected at-large teams from the state’s 10 sections clash for top honors. While other large states, such as Florida and Texas, have devised state playoff formats, the magnitude of California has made that a daunting prospect. California has about 1,500 high schools that offer soccer — which is similar to Florida and Texas combined.
The girls rankings saw less turnover as most of the favored teams won state titles in Florida. Prosper (Texas) remains No. 1 followed by Southern Section Division I champ Temecula Valley, then Dripping Springs (Texas), Mountain View (Calif.), and Carondelet (Calif.), rounding out the Top 5. Mountain View and Carondelet could go head-to-head this week as both are in the same NorCal Division I playoff bracket.
