Continue ReadingThe City of San Francisco could pull its resources and create an all-star club team that would compete with most in the nation. Due to the sheer size of the City, and the Bay Area, talent is dispersed all over the club world, with players leaving the inner city to play in Marin, Danville or Mountain View.
However, the players are San Francisco residents and attend high school in San Francisco, and it is with keepers from the girls side that we begin our San Francisco City Series.
Ari Beddoes, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Senior
Beddoes, who plays for the San Francisco Elite 04/05 GA team, is a front-line keeper. The starter at Sacred Heart is great at communicating with her defenders, she can stop shots with the best of them and is good with the ball at her feet. She is a fearless keeper who will come out and get the ball.
Dina Frenkel Dina Frenkel 5'8" | GK St. Ignatius College Prep | 2024 CA , St. Ignatius, Junior
Frenkel is not the biggest keeper, but she is probably the hardest-working. She’s also fearless and a great leader. She shows a great understanding of angles and knows how to shrink the space between her and an attacker. She knows when to come for the ball, she covers the top corners well thanks to her reaction time and instincts. She plays for the MVLA 2006 team.
Abigail Huega, Urban, Senior
Huega, who plays her club at SF United, was the first-team All-Bay Counties League keeper. She was put under a lot of pressure, especially with teams like Marin Academy and University in her league, and she came up with big stop after stop. She is a very big keeper, at 6-1, and has a big leg as she can flip the field quickly.
Victoria Nealy, University, Sophomore
Nealy is only going to be a sophomore, but last year was University High’s top keeper. She is a regional-level player who is a physical and imposing player between the posts. She does everything you want a keeper to do … she stops shots, plays the ball at her feet and she is fearless. She plays her club at SF Elite for the 2006/2007 girls GA team.
Arienna Price, University, Junior
Price shared time with Nealy at University, as UHS has an embarrassment of riches at keeper, and she was great. She could be a No. 1 for most teams. She is a good shot stopper, solid in possession and she just appears to be cool and collected at all times. She has fun and doesn’t let the pressure get to her. Price plays for Marin FC 06 and her consistent level of play was a big part of her club team’s qualification into the North American Cup at the ECNL playoffs.
